Meh Candy Hearts.
Last year we had an idea for a silly product. You always see sickeningly sweet candy hearts that say things like “Be Mine” or “Kiss Me”, and sometimes you’ll see cynical candy hearts that say things like “You Stink” or “No Way”, but I had never seen Meh Candy Hearts. It was too close to Valentine’s Day for us to order them in time, so we made the Red Flags skits instead.
This year we had plenty of time to order them and think of something special for them. We all pitched in on ideas for what the hearts should say, and then ordered 600 hearts with 6 different sayings from MyCustomCandy.com. It cost $100 for this joke.
Kendall & I stopped by the dollar store for some props, and spent the afternoon filming & photographing some of the candy hearts. We made a little video to go with the posts on Instagram.
Kendall had the bright idea to not let the joke go to waste, since we had way more candy hearts than we needed. We could give them out to folks and advertise ourselves. So we ordered little baggies, bagged up all the candy hearts that we didn’t touch in the photoshoot, I designed a little bit of cardboard we could attach to them, and Kendall wrote an explanation for what exactly they were:
“Not every love is a great romance, so we made these candy hearts for those of you who just aren’t sure where things are going. For the complacent, temporary love of your life, share these candy hearts that say it all. We hope their reaction is as underwhelming as your relationship.”
On February 13th, we dropped them off at our favorite local shop, Morgan Mercantile, so that people could pick them up for free, just in time to start an argument on Valentine’s Day.
