The World We Knew Is Gone

A lonely astronaut explores vast desolate wastelands in search of a new home. This photo series and short film by Wesley Kirk was created in the wake of a failed engagement as a way to reflect & rebuild when the future he had planned suddenly slipped away.

The day I started this project was the day my ex-fiance moved away to Denver, taking my dog and cat with her. I spent a week and a half exploring deserts in and around New Mexico, both getting my mind off things and processing the changes in my life. I lost my best friend, my business partner, the woman I wanted to spend my life with, our pets, and our home. I had to start an entirely new life, and create an entirely new future for myself, and this project was how I decided to begin. On the day we were supposed to get married, I traveled to Devil's Bridge in Sedona, Arizona, where we planned to elope. I spent the entire day there writing about the new life I wanted to lead as well as writing a short film to accompany the photo series, all about my journey through this process. Over the course of 18 months, I spent 62 days traveling to 7 different states and various deserts across the southwest, exploring desolate landscapes in a spacesuit.

This show premiered on October 4th, 2019 at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center in Fort Worth, TX.

It was written about in the Dallas Observer.
